Larry Chiang “Crashing Parties” Lecture

by Larry Chiang on May 2, 2015

Larry Chiang’s 5th book, What They Don’t Teach You At Stanford Business School, launched after a Harvard Law School keynote on the New York Fashion Week runway 09-09-2009. He knows how to sniff out grand openings and crashed them with his dog Baxter. As CEO of Duck9, he spearheads to effort to get college consumers get a FICO over 750. Post H.L.S. keynote, Harvard Business wrote: “What They Don’t Teach You at Stanford Business School” (his last Austin themed post was done #shirtless in “Larry Chiang Sets an intention for SXSW“.

NY Fashion Week has supermodels getting a high FICO credit score because I supermodel on-the-side

Note: It might sound like a joke, but everything below (while funny), is 100% seriously true

I wanted to call this post “How to go from Crasher to VIP. And speak at a conference you’re crashing”. But that signature business recipe is not very popular 😉image.jpeg

Steve Perry, rock legend, crashed me on to the SF giants team bus. His song is “Don’t stop BELIEVING”. Lol, the bus was beelining to the team hotel Intercontinental, but dropped me at the Westin!! People were like, “Who is this 6’5″ asian we are dropping off at the ESPN hotel?”
If you’re curious, “crasher to VIP’s” GuaGuaGuacamole Recipe #4 Re crasher to VIP.  There are 22 GuaGuaGuacamole recipes that reverse engineer ‘signature business recipes’ that my mentor, Mark McCormack taught me.

Let us start with an examination of how one of Palo Alto Community’s College’s students did it.

Ok, @BobMetcalfe. I’ll guest lec a seminar on crashing. I’ll honor my cohort mentor “Dan Ha, CS Pac-12, bc he passed away and intro’d me to u

You see, I was at MIT doing a lecture and thought, “Lol, I’m bringing a rando coterm to MIT so that he can take over part of my lecture. I mean do u really wanna listen to me drone on for an hour?!” (Btw thx Douglas Huang Douglas Hwang, MBA president). Anyway, I thought Dan Ha could go to boston with me to

– co lecture
– network with Harvard (lol I write there https://bit.ly/vc0310b)
– network with MIT (lol, I’m EIR there)
– help Harvard and MIT set up a StartX/SSE labs.
Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
Last night I hung out with @BobMetcalfe#LonghornDemoDay. I met him as a direct result of Dan Ha, @StartX co-founder (#RIP @iamdanHa 0:-)

So then this happened!!

True story.
Dan Ha crashes me into two other conferences (NVCA and VC 65) and wrangles me into a Tim Draper keynote where Tim Draper shouts me out AND I GET A PIC WITH HIM!

My Tim Draper moment was when he said, “You must love this, you’re everywhere

Ok, @BobMetcalfe. I’ll guest lec a seminar on crashing. I’ll honor my cohort mentor “Dan Ha, CS Pac-12, bc he passed away and intro’d me …

Mike Arrington let me crash his new tv studio. Thank you Mike Arrington. This made Dan Ha’s highlight reel that abc news used. Dan’s not here to say ‘thx’, but I know he sees
Let’s break down how Dan Ha crashes parties and venture capital conferences
/1/ Dan Ha cold emails.
Before a party, Dan Ha emails “Wade Roush”. I remember that name because due to Dan’s cold email into the “VC 65” producer, I end up writing for Xconomy “7 things LP’s should be asking VCs and GP’s”. Cold emailing works. Text me https://twitter.com/6502838008 your email and I’ll ping back exactly how Dan Ha cold emails. Dan Ha would use his stanford.edu email address which leads me to my next point…
/2/ Crashing as a student is easy
Enough said
/3/ Crash and Promise a better plus one.
It is common to have a plus one who is a safety blanket that buffers. Don’t invite a plus one that’ll be baggage and mooch free food. Ideally, you’d bring a plus one that has gravitas. If one is not available to you, try to just grab a Larry chiang.
Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
At #vc65, I met keynote speaker “@BobMetcalfe“. Bc StartX’s Dan Ha crashed me in (#ENGR145 alum) twitter.com/iamdanHa #cs178/#cs378

I am seriously serious.

Dan Ha then crashed me into NVCA’s annual VC convention for VCs. This is before Rudy Garza became my solo LP for “Larry Chiang Stanford G51 Fund of Stanford Founders”. NVCA was at a Westin. I remember bc the staff knows me as the Westin heavenly bed model. Westin Copley has a nice pool and hot tub.
I crashed that hot tub
I had to use my Le meridian Hotel connection to get access. That leads me to my next point
image.jpeg
get an SPG card and Tweet
/4/ spg is an Amex card attached to Starwood
Westin hotel is Starwood
W hotel is Starwood
Le meredien is Starwood too
image.jpeg
When I crashed Game #6 and Game #7, I stayed at the ESPN hotel. Aka the Kansas City Westin Hotel
When you’re crashing, it helps to have a great hotel as a base. Think of the Westin hotel Times Sq as your “base camp”. Crashing the “Mt Everest” of conferences “New York Fashion Week” is easy with me as your tour guide. All it takes is PRACTICE
{5} Practice crashing.
Btw, you have not texted me yet.
Practice crashing
Practice setting up a “base camp”. Here are more free basecamps if you haven’t set up your free spg base
– twitter is a base camp. Tweet that you wanna crash, attend. Tweet you’d like to attend #LCFW
Question: But Larry. I don’t have a twitter account.
ANSWER:
Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
What I meant @BobMetcalfe was that @UTLEA‘s Director should get a Less than min Viable twitter account (#LTMVTA. Good seeing u @FSAustin

– Set up a base camp using email to announce yourself

See Dan Ha’s above point.

Set up a base camp using WORDPRESS to announce your RSVP. Blogging is hands down, the best. See StartX’s blog. Never let Silicon Valley intimidate you. Blogging a “less than minimum viable blog post” is my signature PRE crash maneuver. “less than minimum viable blog post” is so popular, I’ve a hashtag that reveals the best stuff I curate #LTMVBP

“Crashing a party is like crashing yourself into a company for a job. Be entrepreneurial about your effort.”
— Larry Chiang
My baseball mentor at UT has nuggets of wisdom. “be respectful of the rules. But have a healthy awareness of the process”
image.jpeg
UT baseball coach Augie used to coach at an Urbana engineering school called The University of Illinois. Note: I was a prima Donna and didn’t take mentorship very well. After my mentor mentee disconnect, my promising career ended
I didn’t blow it with my next mentor: Mark McCormack.
Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
Josh, do u have the CS 178 & CS 378 slides from #LonghornDemoDay? I wanna blog them
#CS178 #CS378

Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
At 9:42pm at #LonghornDemoDay #30apr2015@BobMetcalfe said to ‘Courtney’, “I can’t stop you” Re crashing #cs178
Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
Let’s hope Courtney locked in that verbal deal to attend /audit cs 178 with a follow up email (that cc’s me!) Re #cs178
Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
CS 178
Fall semester “seminar”.
CS 378
Spring semester “lab”.

Lisa Falzone crashed the POS industry. She’s ceo of Revel Systems
Pitfalls
-a- it’s a mistake to crash and not add value. If you’re young and new, just take pics
-b- it’s a mistake to crash and then not write THANK YOU card
image.jpeg
-c- Just because you went to a great school, it doesn’t mean people care
image.jpeg
TellApart founders went to Columbia and Stanford. They crashed LeadsCon and became VIPs when they co-hosted a phat party at Palms Hotel inside the nba suite. Later, they crashed the LeadGen industry. Now you know the rest of the startup story!!
