by Larry Chiang on December 20, 2014

There is a specific legality that is 100% legal. You’re allowed to sell something you do not own if you execute what I coach you to do. You are to pattern replicate the path I identity and copy pasted.
Yes, you copy-paste. Run code.

You should consider copy-paste. Run the “code” of this business recipe. It’s not my recipe. My mentor gave it to me. It solves conflicting YC and is part of my series on “What They Do Not Teach You at Y combinator”.

You see, YC seemingly gives you conflicting advice. Sell something before you build it. And “Make something people love”.

Lets jump ahead to a real world success with MIT kids

Do you realize we sold Plancast ?

The founders had written a postmortem so I activated my plan.

A more basic example would be LABCS 3366. You’d be “selling” Uber. They pay a referral of $20-30 usd.

The idea of “selling something we don’t own” is to execute Paul Graham and Paul Buchheit’s and Sam Altman’s advice: “sell it before you make it” + ‘Do Things That Dont Scale’
