In Silicon Valley, Are You Playing Monopoly Without Knowing The Rules

by Larry Chiang on December 16, 2019

By Larry Chiang
Have you ever played Monopoly, Pit, Dungeons and Dragons or Settlers of Catan with a group of people that just change the rules on the fly!?!
Changes like this will cost you money
Changes to rules on the fly will hurt your career
PROBLEM: Engineers have been taken advantage of since MBAs have been pitching, “We are looking for a technical founder”
Future common sense that’s today a heresy:

As a #SiliconValley engineer, you’re gonna need to use an agent or be your own agent.

In the old days, pro football players would negotiate their own contracts. Here is a Stanford engineering alum who works with an attorney and is now doing what I do which is proactively reading the “source code”. Yes, the actual contract.

Nothing like having your car unjustly towed by your HOA, spending 8 hours combing through community bylaws, catching them red-handed violating their own policies in the bylaws, taking this up against their attorney and then forcing them to pay the fees to get my car back 😁

This is an opinion that is currently a school of thought that few posses but in the future engineers will mostly think:

As a #SiliconValley engineer, you’re gonna need to use an agent or be your own agent like pro athletes @RSherman_25 or #RayAllen (UConn alum).

The first step is awareness and optional would be to text me you’re interested in #cs183law
