I am guessing you currently go to engineering school. I will also go out on a limb and guess that either your professor or a classmate told you about me and this li’l blog post.<\/p>\n

Well, I humbly hope to live up to whatever you heard!<\/p>\n

It’s coming up Oct 26<\/p>\n

#1 best technique I’d do:<\/p>\n

If I were you, the undergrad, I’d email the speakers of Startup School BEFORE STARTUP SCHOOL.<\/p>\n

Studies show 2-9% of people in the audience email people after they hear people speak. Studies show less than 0.5% of student entrepreneurs email speakers before speakers speak.<\/p>\n

Similarly, YC admits only 2-9% of applicants.<\/p>\n

Similarly, 0.5% of VC funded entities will IPO.<\/p>\n

My number one “hack” is to email the speakers BEFORE THEY SPEAK<\/p>\n

Before applying to YC’s Startup School, I’d email 2-5 partners at YC<\/p>\n

#3 best technique I’d do:<\/p>\n

I would show up to a lot of places socially anxious <\/p>\n

It “is” Stanford.<\/p>\n

You should be socially anxious. Especially if you go to the University of Illinois. Like me.<\/p>\n

Well, I’d oust that social anxiety by preparing super well.<\/p>\n

Google every speaker.
Read 2-7 articles about every speaker.
Email every speaker 2-10 times (and cc me EVERYTIME.<\/p>\n

When I first went, I had a copy of Paul Graham’s book and a HUGE bag of bagels from House of Bagels.<\/p>\n

#4 best technique I’d do:<\/p>\n

I’d counter intuitively realize that you should really really like Stanfurdh. <\/p>\n

Huh?!<\/p>\n

Stanford University is an open campus and it allows you to learn here for frees. Free’s is the plural of free because it is SUPER FREE HERE AND SUPER AWESOME.<\/p>\n

You can learn whatever you want.<\/span><\/div>\n

Yes, that includes Startup School<\/p>\n

Think it’s a coincidence that Stanford University is the solo school for Startup School???!? It is not coincidence.<\/p>\n

It is by purpose, on purpose.<\/p>\n

To quote a business school professor, “Larry, the education here is free. The MBA paper diplomas are on costs 2 hundred grand”<\/p>\n

Every startup school speaker since 2007 had legit content that all still “applies. I use the words “every” and ‘all’  because every preso “<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
