We&#8217;re not sure where to start. There are many of us. Successful in our careers without ever having asked someone to be our mentor. A vice president at a software company shared that he had never had a formal mentor. Instead, he asked for advice on an ad-hoc basis, from people he respected and thought he could learn from. He called it &#8220;micro-mentoring.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: none; color: rgb(96, 96, 96); font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.15; text-align: left; \"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-404b76f9-4d49-d967-1f3f-8c7f1d212ae6\"><span style=\"background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap; \">Until then, I assumed all successful people had incredible mentors they talked to all the time. Instead, I sought out specific advice when I needed it, just like the panelist. They&#8217;re organized by companies I&#8217;ve worked at, through my alumni organization, and by non-profits. I frequently volunteer to be a mentor for such programs. I&#8217;ve seen the impact up close, and it&#8217;s positive.
