They are difficult to monetize, so the market instead promotes supplements, wearables, and protocols. The manifesto’s stance is that consumption is often mistaken for action; the evidence-backed basics are unglamorous and therefore under-marketed.

The four questions that cut through any longevity claim before you spend a dollar on it.

These act as a filter against hype. What is the quality of the evidence versus the marketing? What am I giving up in the present (time, money, joy) for an uncertain future gain? And would I still do this if no one were watching or selling it? The point is to stop outsourcing decisions to influencers and start treating yourself as “a study of one.”

The Thirdspan: the missing dimension of longevity that lifespan and healthspan leave out.

Lifespan is how many years you live. Healthspan is how well your body and mind function during those years. Thirdspan (Waxman’s term) is how deeply you flourish—mindset, purpose, relationships, and joy. Research on age beliefs (e.g., Becca Levy’s work) shows that how you think about aging is itself a biological variable that can add years and improve function. Most commercial programs ignore this dimension.

The “Four B’s,” a framework for a practice that fits your life instead of someone else’s protocol.

Rather than adopting a rigid influencer protocol, the framework (detailed in the manifesto) is meant to help you build a sustainable personal practice. It emphasizes starting from your actual constraints, values, and biology instead of copying someone else’s morning routine or supplement stack. The goal is a longevity plan you will actually keep.

Why roughly half of how long you live is genetic, and why that makes personalizing the rest matter more, not less.

Twin and population studies have long suggested genetics explain a substantial share of lifespan (estimates commonly cited in this space range from ~25% to as high as ~50% when focusing on aging-related deaths). The manifesto treats that as reason to stop chasing one-size-fits-all hacks and instead personalize the remaining, modifiable half—sleep, movement, connections, purpose—around your genetics, history, and circumstances. Instead of treating those years as a period of inevitable loss to be delayed, the idea is to design them the way you would design a financial retirement plan: a written vision of who you want to be, how you want to feel, and what you want to contribute. Positive age beliefs and intentional design, not just biomarkers, predict whether people improve or decline in later life.

The through-line is agency plus skepticism: use evidence, ignore most of the sales pitch, and treat longevity as life design rather than product consumption.

Midlife Hero’s Journey Workshop

x.com

WordPress’d from my personal iPhone, 650-283-8008, number that Steve Jobs texted me on

https://www.YouTube.com/watch?v=ejeIz4EhoJ0

A Study of One: The Longevity Manifesto , a free MEA guide by Derek Gehl (MEA’s CEO and a former supplements-industry insider) and gerontologist Barbara Waxman. A Study of One: The Longevity Manifesto argues that the commercial longevity industry sells products while the highest-leverage behaviors are free, hard to package, and highly individual. meawisdom.com
