Derivation, Sourcing and Experiencing the “Larry Chiang Reverse Franchise Tax”

by Larry Chiang on March 20, 2013

By Larry Chiang

This concept is a pillar for me and this blog post is an attempt to be fully transparent. First the concept. A reverse franchise tax is where you as an undergrad just takes and runs with one of my ENGR 145 franchise concepts. Normally when you say “franchise”, you think an overlord from a faraway land that you pay exorbitant fees to. Usually, when you say ‘tax’, you think OMG I forgot to pre-pay my quarterly tax.

A bright shining example of the “Larry Chiang Reverse Franchise Tax” took place when UT undergrads hosted the second bi-annual ATX Startup Crawl After Party at 10:05PM, March 7, 2013. This “franchise” is off to a nice start. I co-founded this concept like I co-founded UT Entrepreneurship Week.

Oct 9, 2012 was this first ATX Startup Crawl AfterParty hosted by UT undergrads.

Oct 3, 2013 will be the next “ATX Startup Crawl AfterParty hosted by UT undergrads.” It will coincide with Austin City Limits.

More than just ‘AfterParties’, there are ENGR 145 franchise concepts that comprise the ‘Larry Chiang Reverse Franchise Tax’. They can be found under “Ga Ga Guaranteed Exits” (13+ blog post mentions) and “Ga Ga Guaranteed Revenue” (8+ blog post mentions). Calling the Larry Chiang Reverse Franchise Tax — “the 100% Affiliate Program” would be an option as well.

To explore this further, you can YouTube-search ENGR 145 videos. Also, you can take ENGR 145 at Stanford University this summer. No I don’t write REC letters (so don’t ask). Here is more info https://bit.ly/buster14512

QUESTION – How do you make money?
LARRY CHIANG answer: Well I financially benefited from having taught ENGR 145. So charging you or undergrads $30,000 for running with my signature afterparty maneuver seems unfair. Plus, if you read, re-read, and read my TechCrunch article in 2009 about After Party execution, you could probably have ‘stolen it’. Oh, this shitake is fun for me. Plus, it gets me to leave the Austin Ventures VIP tent during ACL.

Question: why do you do this??
LARRY CHIANG answer: it’s totally fun. Plus truth-be-told, I get a lot of it too. I mean the 2 hours I spent getting UT undergrads up and going with #UTeWeek and the 3.5 hours on the inaugural ATX Startup Crawl AfterParty were easy. Plus the commute to campus was made shorter when I just got them a room to party at the Four Seasons. Campuses can be SO confusing!

QUESTION – do you have a hidden agenda?
Answer: People that ask this think that 5.5 hours took 500 hours. It was 5 hours and there were two franchise concepts birthed. Nice ones too

I mean UT Entrepreneurship Week is cool right?! I mean I gotta eat Guacamole anyway. Plus the Four Seasons uses my Gua Gua Guacamole recipe so why not eat it at an AfterParty.
