Silicon Valley, Next #SiliconValleyNext

by Larry Chiang on September 7, 2015

Larry Chiang hacked the ‘New York Times best seller’ list by pre-promoting blog posts and live, in-real-life events 09-09-09. What They Don’t Teach You At Stanford Business School debuted at NYFW. WTDTYASBS’s avoided book festivals for distribution and instead went direct to Sundance and SXSW for book optioning. As CEO of Duck9, Chiang’s company was built on two mentors: Gerri Detweiler and Mark McCormack. They wrote “Ultimate Credit Handbook” and, “What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School“, respectively. This post is about the next Silicon Valley in Palo Alto.

New York Fashion Week is sooooooo fun!

Cities are silly. They all want to be the next Silicon Valley.

Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
Cities are awash in money. They’re standing in trillions in M1 money supply. But yearning for a $300mm fund to HQ there
Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
I’m engineering “Silicon Valley Next”, bcc @BobMetcalfe (I’ll execute these 17)  {#SiliconValleyNext runs off #WrightBros‘ methods}

This is exactly what will be the “Silicon Valley, next”.

Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
1/17 #SiliconValleyNext: You edit. The #WrightBros‘ edited 6 mentors’ work. CS 183 was nice. #cs183e‘s what you #cs183Do

Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
2/17 #SiliconValleyNext: You sell bikes as an aerospace #ENGR145#WrightBros‘ SOLD and did sales #1127WestThirdStreet w/the #cs183s method

Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
3/17 the basis for #SiliconValleyNext incorporates Midwestern basics. #SiliconValleyNext is actually as old as Dayton Ohio’s #WrightBros

Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
4/17 #SiliconValleyNext: ideas are free for your city or region to “#cs183Do“…, but I’m executing this in Palo Alto

Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
5a/17 #SiliconValleyNext is actually old. Its the concept of a sales engineer. Ya know, the ones that make $200k bc what CS major cold calls

Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
5b/17 #SiliconValleyNext is actually old. It’s commercializing the technologist before they commercialize the tech

Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
5c/17 #SiliconValleyNext is an age old concept. You could never hire a Fortune 500, vp of sales, for a startup. Founders had to sell

Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
6/17 #SiliconValleyNext needs an incredibly innovative university. That would be Stanford University, pulling away from the pack.

7/17 #SiliconValleyNext has the dynamic that the encumbered rich do not pick what cream gets to rise. We rise in spite of VC #vcSecrets

8/17 #SiliconValleyNext is actually just Mark McCormack’s 1983 book. (I’m crying as I tweet this) Read: #WTDTYAHBS pic.twitter.com/WFwBGQBfRD

9/17 #SiliconValleyNext is realizing VC short-circuits. Literally. Credit as a form of capital is 100,000,000x any LP fund #SelfFundSellFun

10/17 #SiliconValleyNext sprinkles car sales person skills on to an engineer. Think 3 @stanfordbball captains getting 3 Masters Degrees

11/17 #SiliconValleyNext is all upside. No risk. We didn’t get an engr degree, learn Pro sales skills just to be in the 95 casualty rate. 0%

12/17 #SiliconValleyNext takes dead YC entities. Fixes em from #Austin#OakBrook/ #94305/ YVR/ SIN. Edits them after #Postmortem#ENGR145s

Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
13/17 #SiliconValleyNext won’t be getting executed by your region :-0 While the idea is real and awesome. The idea is 0. It’s the execution.

14/17 #SiliconValleyNext is 656 Knight plus #641Campus. It’s their #1127WestThirdStreet#WrightBros were student athletes too

15/17 #SiliconValleyNext has about 22 “signature business recipes”. I got em from a 1983 book #WTDTYAHBS. Repackaged as #GuaGuaGuacamole

16/17 #SiliconValleyNext leverages the fact that AMERICAN gov’t has three branches. They “check and balance” each other.

17/17 #SiliconValleyNext is about EDITING a startup that never crossed The Chasm. #dttdsBHM is painful. So, cross (from the Rt) #CTCFTR

Silicon Valley next is the pattern of the next Silicon Valley. Plot spoiler: It’s where I am +- 50 miles #SiliconValleyNext
