by Larry Chiang on March 2, 2015

Larry Chiang’s 5th book, What They Don’t Teach You At Stanford Business School, launched after a Harvard Law School keynote on the New York Fashion Week runway 09-09-2009. He knows how to sniff out grand openings and crashed them with his dog Baxter. As CEO of Duck9, he spearheads to effort to get college consumers get a FICO over 750. Post H.L.S. keynote, Harvard Business wrote: “What They Don’t Teach You at Stanford Business School” (his latest post was done #shirtless as a yogi who “Sets an intention for SXSW“.

Mentorship.
Paramount in my ascent to “Silicon Valley institution” is how I pay attention to mentorship. So many mention the concept. Almost no one delves in as deep. Mentorship can seem counterintuitive and this column is meant to showcase
– how mentorship really works
– how it might develop
– what mentorship concepts to pay attention to
And
– what mentorship concepts I pay attention to:

Kobe Bryant said, “There is power in understanding the journey of others to help create your own.” pic.twitter.com/XkMiWYoCHa

Following this tweet, I watched “Muse” on March 1. It’s Kobe Bryant’s documentary. In “Muse”, Kobe Bryant mentioned 11 mentors before the halfway point. Let me repeat, Bryant cited almost a dozen mentors by name.

Michael Jordan told me, “I can’t beat Kobe. He stole all my moves”. Here is a YouTube video of what Mr Mike was talking about:

February 12, 2012 an athlete had an inflection point. His name was Jeremy Lin and he mentioned over a dozen mentors

Postgame…

Kobe Bryant is a great competitor, gracious host and incredible sportsman. ImmaFan. And I’m officially in bizzaroWorld bc I’m 100% serious.

Later that summer, my Engineering 145 TA, Yusef Celik doled out some homework for me:

Larry Chiang (@LarryChiang)
YES. and I did Yusef’s HW. #engr145 P19: copy paste. p40: Kobe Bryant mimics the *best* as a student of the game

I aced that homework

I aced Engr 145 (and set the bell curve https://bit.ly/buster14512v)

Winning last night was precisely because of Kobe Bryant, his work ethic, & his ability to mentor pro athletes. #MMPPI
I’m mentoring this 9 year old to be a CS major CEO #CSmajorCEO. My mentee’s name is “Chris”.
