Great Example of Software Built Versus Bought

I built a custom Applicant Tracking System this weekend.

5 hours of work. $18.74 total cost. Already deployed internally.

I’m blown away by @Replit AI.

Here’s a (hype-free) insight on where software development is headed…

We’re hiring and reviewing a lot of resumes right now. Having used them for years, instead of buying a full blown ATS like @Greenhouse or @bamboohr, I wanted to try and build our own for Switchboard and see how far I could get with a few hours on the weekend.

Replit AI isn’t just building basic front and back ends anymore – it’s (very quickly) evolved into something that will make custom software accessible to every company this year.

Not only did it build the essentials you’d expect, but to get nerdy for a moment, it also figured out SO much under the hood stuff quickly, and effectively:

• Created database architecture

• Built the backend database

• Built AI Resume analysis & scoring with prompt customization in the UX

• Decided for itself that it needed to use Websockets to stream the OpenAI AI responses in real time like ChatGPT does vs the UX hanging as it waits for AI to come back with it’s answers

• Connected it with the @filloutcom API to bring in new candidates automatically (I don’t know how Zapier is going to compete with this approach a year from now…)

• Built (legit) authentication and login UX

• Built a filtering and tagging system

• Any bugs or errors were figured out & fixed within 1-2 prompts when I had to (very occasionally) provide feedback

• Built all of this with React and other modern frameworks and knew when to install different libraries

I’m at thousands of lines of code now and haven’t written a single one.

While this won’t “take down” incumbents overnight, imagine where this technology will be in 3 months let alone 12.

You still need strong software architecture fundamentals to guide it, but @amasad, @mattppal and team – you’re fundamentally changing how software gets built.
