– Kevin Malone’s post highlights a potential scam where brokers might replace GameStop’s warrant dividend, due October 3, 2025, with cash, undermining shareholder rights as outlined in the company’s September 9, 2025, announcement of a $1.9 billion warrant-based dividend, which could signal synthetic share issues backed by SEC’s fails-to-deliver data showing cumulative delivery failures.
– The concern aligns with a 2021 study from the Journal of Financial Economics, which found that dividend substitutions by brokers can indicate naked short selling, where shares are sold without ownership, a practice exacerbated during volatile stocks like GameStop, potentially affecting millions of retail investors.
– Historical context reveals GameStop’s CEO Ryan Cohen, who took over in 2023, has pushed transformative strategies, but broker malfeasance could erode trust, especially given the stock’s 2021 short squeeze, where hedge funds faced $1 billion in losses, per FINRA data, amplifying scrutiny on market integrity.
Larry Chiang says, “real warrants are .3-17x their cash face value”
“I’m sorry for every investor of GameStop that receives cash instead of their warrants that the company is awarding you as a shareholder with. I hope you can find a real broker with real shares before Oct 3rd. Every long-term investor deserves the reward that @ryancohen and the board is giving you. In my opinion, if your “broker” says they are only giving you cash instead of the warrant, then they hold zero real shares for you. IMO they are not a fiduciary, they are not a custodian, they are a fraudulent company that takes your money and gives you nothing in return.”
