No one wants to be known as a salesman when they’re an engineer.
So, that’s why sales engineers get a 30% pay increase over the best engineer. Because sales engineers have sales in the title and a set of skills that many educated engineers won’t learn, they get significantly extra pay.

Doing well at sales earns you a lot. Doing good engineering work, pays you a lot also. Finding a person who does both requires the employer to pay a premium.

Elon Musk took a deposit down for a car that hasn’t been made yet. This makes him a pretty good salesman. Elon Musk landed a rocket vertically. This makes him a pretty legendary engineer.
