Behind the Scenes, SxSW Party Curation

by Larry Chiang on February 18, 2015

Larry Chiang’s 5th book, WTDTYASBS, launched at a Harvard Law School keynote, so he knows about grand openings (He even attends and promotes the ones he isn’t invited to also). As CEO of Duck9, he leads an army to help college student consumers get a FICO over 770. Post H.L.S. keynote, Harvard Business wrote: “What They Don’t Teach You at Stanford Business School” (his latest post: “Setting an intention for SXSWi“.

NY Fashion Week is just like the Mom’s Day Fashion Show. Instead of the ‘Union’, its held at Lincoln Center

The number one question I get asked: “How do I know about the best parties at the SuperBowl, New York Fashion Week, Sundance and Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.”
Answer: Lets look at an example, south by southwest. It’s #SXSW.
Like any Hall of Fame athlete, there is a lot that goes on behind-the-scenes. Yup, I just compared myself to a QB.
#1/ Invites that land in my email.
Surprisingly few events are emailed to
#2/ an “annual”
University of Texas hosts an annual sxsw event
It’s good! I don’t remember if I helped. I don’t remember if I stimulated the conversation to start, up a startup party. But it leads to my next point
#3 helping to engineer up a party
You can just guess who is hosting. For example, Kauffman foundation. They support StartX (formerly SSE Labs). They started small in 2011. Now they do more. Their startup space was nicely anchored on 6th Street.
Another example is #MeatUp8. It is annual and at Fogo. Hands down, it’s the best event for networking for entrepreneurs.
This leads to my next point…
#4/ I post sxsw parties in my value added RSS feed.
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication -THE general public calls it Twitter.

best #sxsw parties will be previewed in my WordPress (old school eh?!)

I sell a list to VCs for $1,500+. It’s at Right now it’s sold out. It’s popular because it is hand curated. I also connect you the founder with the host. If you’re a founder, blog your intentions and then link to

“hearts after dark” party was a fundraiser for SF General.
Game 6 in Kansas City had an ESPN party at the Westin Hotel. Game 7 after party was at the Intercontinental. When partying is your part time job as an engineering major, you get good at it
Steve Perry! #Game7. Team bus.
I network with the natives.
#5 Last years franchise event wants to be 20-50% better than last years
For example #MeatUp8.
Some franchises don’t get renewed (I won’t name names 😉
