Can You Get Paid to Debut at SXSWi 2014?

by Larry Chiang on October 1, 2013

Larry Chiang has a Jedi in Business Administration (JBA. A JBA gets paid to get MBA knowledge). He spoke at a Harvard Law School event and then Harvard Business HARBUS wrote: “What They Don’t Teach You at Stanford Business School“. He spoke at a Stanford BASES event, did Q&A via text message and even taught a class at Stanford University on entrepreneurship called ENGR 145. He now scandalously teaches us, “How to Get Paid to Debut at SXSW 2014″. Pay attention because while it seems outlandish, the ideas are right on point.

Lets get away from theory and examine tactics, practice and case studies. Theorizing and pontificating how SXSW is a leaving, breathing tech conference is a lot to process. Here is what I will be advising startups to execute at SXSW 2014 taking place March 6-13 that will actually cost a negative amount of money.

Let me repeat that.

Doing this at SXSW will actually make you money. My mentor taught me to make money while I am making money. The entire line up of answers here on Quora’s “Whats the best launch strategy for a web startup” assumes launching costs money.

More specifics (Its up to you to expand tactical knowledge by googling. I will not link)
– attend SXSW for 36 hours. Flight ONLY. No hotel.
– it is not a launch party. It is not a debut party, nor a grand opening party for your web startup/app / consumer internet. It is a Premier Party that you can later upgrade to a launch party if you execute and get momentum
– Got momentum?! Momentum can be engineered up. I recommend “EUTWMPPM” Engineer up a Tidal Wave of Momentum Perpetual Promotion Machine.
– Utilize EUTWMPPM component number one. An Eventbrite event that pattern replicates a Minimum Viable Party.
– Take Paul Graham’s advice and “Do things that do not scale” Do Things that Don’t Scale
– Utilize EUTWMPPM component number two. Minimum Viable Blog Posts
– Fundraise the cost of the flight by reducing your sponsorship ask to a recockulously low dollar amount. I would fundraise from VCs.
– Utilize EUTWMPPM component number three and more. YouTube up a video that links to your Eventbrite in the YouTube description.
– Utilize the afterparty maneuver for your MVP’s MVP (get it?! Your min viable products Minimum Viable Party
– Allow your party to be engulfed by a larger entity
– Charge for tix to your Premier Party. If you plan of offering free tix, do a rebated ticket versus strait up free. The rebate model should be similar to LCRRM.
