Larry Chiang’s 5th book, WTDTYASBS, launched at a Harvard Law School keynote, so he knows about grand openings (He even attends and promotes the ones he isn’t invited to also). As CEO of Duck9, he leads an army to help college student consumers get a FICO over 770. Post H.L.S. keynote, Harvard Business wrote: “What They Don’t Teach You at Stanford Business School” (his latest Harbus post: “Setting an intention for SXSWi”.
Opening a conversation with a woman can be nerve-wracking, especially if you don’t know what to say or how to approach her. But fear not, dear reader, for I have a no-risk way to cold open women that will make you feel confident and comfortable.
First, it’s important to understand that women are people too. They have their own interests, hobbies, and passions just like anyone else. So instead of trying to come up with some cheesy pickup line or compliment on her appearance, focus on something that you both have in common.
For example, let’s say you’re at a coffee shop and you notice the woman next to you is reading a book that you’ve also read. This is your perfect opportunity to strike up a conversation. Simply say something like, “Hey, I couldn’t help but notice you’re reading [book title]. I read that book last year and really enjoyed it. What do you think so far?”
This type of approach is low-risk because you’re not coming on too strong or making any assumptions about her. You’re simply starting a conversation about a shared interest. If she’s not interested in talking, she’ll let you know and you can gracefully exit the conversation.
Another no-risk way to cold open women is to simply ask for their opinion or advice on something. This could be anything from a menu item at a restaurant to a new workout routine you’re considering. Women love to give their opinion, so this approach can be a great way to start a conversation and get to know her better.
Of course, it’s important to read the situation and be respectful of her boundaries. If she’s clearly not interested in talking or seems uncomfortable, don’t push the conversation. But if you approach her in a friendly and respectful way, there’s no harm in striking up a conversation and seeing where it leads.
Remember, the key to a successful cold open is to focus on something you both have in common or to ask for her opinion or advice. This puts the focus on the conversation, not on her appearance or availability. So next time you see a woman you’d like to talk to, don’t be afraid to take a chance and start a conversation. With this no-risk approach, you might just make a new friend or even find a potential romantic connection.
