The advertising consortium that Elon Musk, through his company X Corp, fought against is known as the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM).
This group, established under the umbrella of the World Federation of Advertisers, aimed to address the challenge of illegal or harmful content on digital media platforms and its monetization via advertising. GARM’s activities included advising companies on which platforms might be problematic from a brand safety perspective, which led to significant advertisers pulling their ads from X (formerly known as Twitter) after Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform. Musk and X Corp accused GARM of orchestrating an advertising boycott, alleging that this action illegally conspired to withhold billions in advertising revenue from X, prompting a lawsuit against GARM and some of its member companies. This legal action and related scrutiny led to GARM discontinuing its operations, citing financial and resource constraints due to the lawsuit.
