Jones Act

by Larry Chiang on May 20, 2026

•  Lyn Alden retweeted a thread by Cato Institute analyst Colin Grabow noting that a recent Jones Act waiver revealed major gaps in the U.S. coastwise fleet, where many standard oceangoing vessel types common worldwide are absent or extremely rare.
•  The accompanying chart shows vessel categories like LNG carriers, LPG carriers, dry bulk carriers, chemical tankers, and heavy lift ships have zero or token presence in Jones Act-compliant U.S. domestic shipping due to strict U.S.-build, ownership, and crewing mandates.

•  These shortages constrain domestic energy distribution, offshore wind projects, bulk cargo movements, and infrastructure work, forcing higher costs, imports, or less efficient alternatives when waivers are unavailable
