Malapropisms

Joey Tribbiani (played by Matt LeBlanc) from Friends is famous for his lovable, dim-witted charm, which often shows up in his malapropisms (mixing up similar-sounding words or phrases), mispronunciations, and comically wrong uses of vocabulary. These moments highlight his “not-so-bright” side while making him endearing.

Here are some of his most memorable examples of misspeaking:

Classic Malapropisms (Wrong Word/Phrase Mix-Ups)

  • “Moo point” instead of “moot point.”
Joey explains: “It’s like a cow’s opinion. It just doesn’t matter. It’s moo.”
(This one became iconic and fans still quote it.)
  • “Supposebly” instead of “supposedly.”
He repeats it confidently in a conversation about whether something happened (e.g., “Supposebly… did they go to the zoo? Supposebly.”).
  • “Joey’s apple” instead of “Adam’s apple.”
When something hurts his throat/neck area, he calls it “my Joey’s apple,” thinking it’s named after him personally.

Thesaurus Overuse and Fancy Word Fails

Joey once used a thesaurus to rewrite an entire letter of recommendation, replacing every word with a synonym. The result was hilariously nonsensical, and he signed it as “Baby Kangaroo Tribbiani.”
He also struggles with words like “abysmal” or “acrimonious,” often misusing or misunderstanding them in context.

Other Funny Misspeaks and Misunderstandings

  • He spells out words awkwardly to avoid saying them in front of a baby: “You can’t have S-E-X in front of a B-A-B-I-E.”
  • When trying to learn French for an acting role, he butchers phrases like “Je m’appelle Claude” into gibberish such as “Me poo poo” or “Je da flup flee!”
  • He doesn’t fully grasp concepts like air quotes or certain idioms, leading to confused reactions.

These slips are a running gag throughout the series, especially in later seasons where Joey’s character leans more into the “lovable dummy” trope. His most famous correct catchphrase is the smooth “How you doin’?”—which contrasts perfectly with all the times he gets words hilariously wrong.

If you’re thinking of a specific episode or quote, feel free to give more details for even more examples!
