This year’s VidCon was the best yet. I was on a panel about building a business on @YouTube with some other amazing creators, here are my takeaways:
To Grow, Respond
A foolproof way to grow your audience when starting out is to make a habit of responding to every single comment you get. I still remember every creator that’s ever responded to me – it makes that big a difference.
In the early days of growing Epic Gardening, I spent 3 years responding to nearly every comment and it made a huge difference in building community.
Sell Out Without Selling Out
There are so many different ways to monetize on YouTube. Three of my fellow panelists do exceptionally well with channel memberships, giving their community access to exclusive streams, Q&As, priority response to comments, and more.
In my case, I listened deeply to my audience and learned they were interested in a few products that I’d featured in my videos, so I hunted down the manufacturer, imported the product, and offered it for sale.
To avoid “selling out”, just listen – your audience will tell you what they’d be happy to buy from you.
Be Uncopyable
There’s so much competition in the world of content these days it can be intimidating as a creator to even get started. Fellow panelist Cassandra Bankson – a model and skincare creator – calls her style “Ghost Pepper Authenticity” which as a gardener I obviously love.
She leans into exactly what she believes and more importantly what she doesn’t stand for. The only uncopyable asset you have is the “You” part of YouTube – so lean into it.
Every time I come to VidCon I learn so much, so expect a few more takeaways!

CS 183 customer service
✅ in addition to the Vidcon knowledge nuggets, let me add, “doing customer service before dollar one arrives”
So what you’re doing here is your responding and providing customer service. Can you provide a tracking number? Can you wrangle a person from point a, which is they watched a video on your ex/Twitter and then they get wrangled to point B
Point B is the title of your video
For example
Nine things undergrads should understand about the counterintuitive truth of getting a FICO score over 800. POINT A IS: THEY JUST LEFT THE COMMENT.
Point B is a Phico of just under 800.
✅ see us 183 customer service is realizing that every user matters in the beginning
✅ in the beginning, doing this type of customer service work seems like you are, “doing things that don’t scale, but have momentum”
