What Larry’s Teaching Us, I Guess

by Larry Chiang on April 24, 2023

– LEARNING (things that will get me across the *****current***** milestone) combined with ACTION. Do not learn something new without taking honest action on it.
– My time-to-action and time-to-decision must be virtually INSTANT.
– Identify as a rich person ACTING as a poor person. Now just stop acting dumb and poor.
– It doesn’t take money to make money when you sell someone’s else’s stuff. That way, you don’t allocate time & money to the product and you can focus resources on selling. There’s way less moving parts that can steal your time and attention. It’s also already built and you don’t see the 1,000 versions that didn’t work. You are also less emotional than selling your own stuff. This is how I wasted MONTHS (IF NOT YEARS) — too much time on product, not selling.
– External API: How you and your biz connect to other businesses. Whether partnerships, having your name on something, having a percent commission, etc.
– The super high impact strategy: use a lead magnet to sell other people’s stuff.
– The war for my attention (distraction & being spread too thin) is my biggest enemy. Don’t make it worse with wasting time, shiny object syndrome from social media, or new projects. Finish this last term as Toastmasters president (big time commitment), and progressively simplify my responsibilities & projects. Focus on the few not the many. Ideally, one business and my content creation.
– What classifies as one business? What about one business w/ multiple projects? Delegation seems to help mitigate this but my attention is still critical for *directing* the delegation in the right direction.
– If I want to get truly rich, selling SOMEONE ELSE’S high ticket item  (lead gen) is the way to go.
– Always try and set up the situation so THEY come to YOU.
– Lead gen isn’t just getting leads at a certain price (IE: ads) and reselling them for higher. It’s selling RESULTS and having clients pay AFTER the fact. Charge per closed deal, not per lead. Get creative with generating leads, ideally getting them for nearly nothing (IE: cold outreach, word of mouth, having a presence online that gives leads free value). How can I do this while still having a good cash flow cycle if it takes >month to close?
– When doing lead gen, focus on ONE customer first. Intimately get a feel of how and why this works. Don’t worry about scale until you do it the “dirty” way. Pick up the phone and talk to people. Eventually, you can run campaigns to do this at scale.
– We aren’t a CRM or a web design company. We take people from 2 deals to 8 deals. CRM and websites are just the tools we use to achieve that result.
– B2B lead gen: give people free or super low cost tools & make the real money on the lead gen.
– Selling is easy when you build momentum through progressively larger commitments. Use bait. (Event → Dinner → Club) OR (Online Traffic → Free Lead Magnet → Low ticket item → High Ticket Item).
– Do things that are counterintuitive but true. Don’t over analyze: copy the methods that work first, even if they don’t feel right.
