Why is talking about money, credit, making money and saving money at taboo

by Larry Chiang on June 6, 2024

Talking about money has always been taboo.
This is the #1 problem blocking people from becoming richer.
I believe humans mainly learn from each other and we share basically everything online now except our personal finances.
But there’s a clear demand for it.
Go on subreddits like /r/fatFIRE and apps like blind and the most popular threads are always about money.
That’s because folks are anonymous so they share more, but how can you trust anyone sharing a photoshopped screenshot?
There’s a meme where fake gurus with paid discords are literally just sharing screenshots of their calculator app showing their “gains”.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Our mission at @AfterHour_HQ is to help people make better financial decisions together.
“Pseudonymous but verified” was our key initial insight into unlocking more discourse from people with credibility.
The positions being shared in the app are all real because we connect with your brokerage and it’s a powerful primitive.
We’re starting with degens and active traders because they’re the power users and make the most content.
Our vision is to capture all the financial topics in our increasingly complicated modern life.
Social media is not built for financial discourse. AfterHour is.
And we’re doing it right, unlike the others who’ve tried.
For too long, personal finance has been a solitary journey.
Together, we can make it a shared experience, enriching and empowering everyone involved.
