Larry Chiang’s Law on Getting Fired (and Doubling)

by Larry Chiang on December 2, 2012

By Larry Chiang

Getting “FIRED” is one of the toughest lessons that school cannot prepare you for.

I teach this under, “What They Will NEVER Teach You at Stanford Business School”, in my chapter 11. The 11th chapter of my sequel’s sequel is on ‘Failing Forward’. It comes out 11-11-14.

Read my mentors book, “What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School” because that’s where I get my best stuff from.

The Larry Chiang’s law says:

“Every time you get fired executing something entrepreneurially (but a bureaucrat hates and fires you), you double.”

It’s an expanded concept I tweeted this summer with Brian Barela commenting, “like law of diminishing returns in reverse”

Larry Chiang ✰ (@LarryChiang) tweeted at 1:32pm – 23 Jul 12:

Every time I get fired as an engineering entrepreneur, I double. It’s like Metcalfe’s law or Moore’s law (https://twitter.com/LarryChiang/status/227501460219392000)

For example, Stanford students started SSE Labs and administrators tried to fire them from their effort.

For example, I got fired from moderating my own panel at “Summit at Stanford”. I doubled because I did 35 things right IMMEDIATELY after I got fired. My brand doubled.

For example, I got fired from speaking at Stanford University BASES eBootcamp 2012. I did 35 things right IMMEDIATELY after I got fired. My brand doubled.

For example, I got fired from the Pontiac Zone Office. I did 35 things right IMMEDIATELY after I got fired. My street smarts doubled.

For example, I got fired from Nalco Chemical Company for doubling my territory that included Naperville. I did 35 things right IMMEDIATELY after I got fired. My salary doubled.

If you’re reading this far down, you’re probably curious as to what steps I took to double because you yourself got fired.
