What the Oregon Duck Mascot, Puddles, Can Teach a Stanford Engineer About Entrepreneurship

by Larry Chiang on November 18, 2012

By Larry Chiang

The Oregon Duck mascot can teach us Stanford undergrad engineers a lot about entrepreneurship. As students at the best engineering school attached to a campus with the best business school, GSB, it’s important to learn from and get mentored by the best.

As far as mascots go, the Oregon duck is ranked #1 in the Larry Chiang weighted average capital curve. Yes, Puddles edges out the MIT beaver mascot in capital created via entrepreneurship execution and education at the undergrad engineering level.

Let’s take a deep dive into what we can tactically pattern replicate. Let’s benchmark Puddles and pattern iterate. Know that I pattern recognize the Oregon mascot to be legendary.

-1- Puddles on getting a legendary internship.

Every engineer can get paid to get educated. This is at the heart of getting a legendary internship. Similar to my talk at BASES, Puddles worked in the summer at ESPN.

Here is Puddles working at ESPN where Ryan Spoon is VP of Platform. VIDEO:

Remember, before you create and co-found ESDN (Extra Special Duck Network) or D.u.C.K.11 (Deep Underground Credit Knowledge) or DCUK (Digital Credit Underground Knowledge)… You work at ESPN and later do a sequel business.

Remember the lesson you learned at ENGR 145. Sequel businesses avoid the chasm Geoffrey Moore talks about and massively – Risk Mitigates And – Risk Eliminates

ENGR145’s Anchor Concepts are “Lemonade and Gua Gua Guacamole”. Puddles mastery of the sequel concept moves you to the right on the entrepreneur bell curve

-2- Spin Yourself Out from a Company You’ve Never Worked at.

Puddles is a easy to love if you love Donald Duck. If you put an Oregon “O” sweatshirt on a Donald Duck. Basically Puddles spun himself out of the Disney corporation.

Puddles knows that startup entities are way more risky and have uber high infant mortality. LC Mini concept corporations (#LCMCC) is what Puddles executes.

In continuing with the above, ESDN (Extra Special Duck Network) is a spin out of ESPN

D.u.C.K.11 (Deep Underground Credit Knowledge) is a spin out of Duck9

DCUK (Dutch Connection United Kingdom) is a VC fund that mirrors FCUK

-3- Integrating Comedy with Awareness and Education
