Making Sense of Entrepreneurship Class and Startup Education at Stanford

by Larry Chiang on September 26, 2014

Larry Chiang parlayed the Fair Isaac FICO score algorithm to help consumers get a FICO, up over 780. He studied entrepreneurship at Stanford for free as a Buck Cardinal Club member. After Chiang’s Harvard Law keynote, Harvard Business wrote: “What They Don’t Teach You at Stanford Business School“ (the same title as his NY Times best seller). If you read his scandalously awesome “What a Supermodel Can Teach a Stanford MBA”, “How a Stanford Engineer Works Hard and Smart at SXSW” and “How to Get Man-Charm”, you will like his latest post: “Making Sense of Entrepreneurship Class and Startup Education at Stanford”

By Larry Chiang
No question, Stanford leads right now in educating founders.
The purpose of this column is to examine founder education trends, look at class history, make sense of founder education and extrapolate things that might happen.

Right now, the startup class darling is CS 183B (How to start a startup):

While you’re in #CS183B, I rec you execute the business-subroutine #CS183D cc @bmenell .com/blog/2014/09/2…

[CS 183D is a fictitious class]

Steve Blank who taught ENGR 145 under MS&E had some colorful things to say about CS 183B.
Engineering 145 is, of course, the legendary class “Technology Entrepreneurship”. #ENGR145 was started by Tom Byers and Randi Komisar (I think. Am I right?)

Peter Thiel taught CS 183 Spring quarter, 2012
(All the notes are free)
ENGR 145 has a sequel class over at the Design school. It’s called ENGR245, “Lean Launchpad”. I think it came out winter quarter 2011
Startup education also occurs outside of class.
For example, YC did Startup School. Those started at Bishop and Dinkelspiel, 2008.
And the Business School did one day conferences during Stanford Entrepreneur Week
